Basic model and gearing

“The heart of your bike,” says Thomas.

There are various hub gear and derailleur gear systems to choose from.

Find out which one suits you best!

“You always feel like you’re in the right gear. No matter how you shift,” says Thomas Bernds about the Rohloff hub system.
He loves its symmetric shifting geometry, workmanship, and great efficiency. “The best choice for any purpose, unless you want an extremely light bike. But be forewarned: choose Rohloff once, and you’ll choose it forever.” Produced in Fuldatal near Kassel, Germany.

Metres of development: 1.68–8.85 m
Available with thumb or grip shifter

This gear system for solid everyday riding is even more tightly sealed – and hence more durable – in its premium version. The range of transmission ratios here gives you enough leeway to handle any situation while avoiding unnecessary complexity. And the Shimano Nexus is also extremely reliable and nearly maintenance-free.

The gear system for solid everyday riding and for everyone who’s used to riding with a coaster brake. The range of transmission ratios here gives you enough leeway to handle any situation while avoiding unnecessary complexity. And the Shimano Nexus is also extremely reliable and nearly maintenance-free.

Stress-free and addictive – especially around town. All it takes to shift this hub gear by the tried-and-true manufacturer Sturmey Archer is a quick backwards kick – which gives you a sporty riding experience and lets your hands stay on the handlebars. What’s more, well-considered gear ratios make longer trips easy. So it’s perfect for commuting – “except, perhaps, in San Francisco,” says Thomas. “Or Wuppertal,” adds Michaela.

Transmission ratio in second gear: 1:1.38

Stress-free and addictive for everyone who’s used to riding with a coaster brake. And since you only need to add a brake in front, there’s one less cable from front to rear – which also makes for a clean look.

Transmission ratio in second gear: 1:1.38

The featherweight among gear systems. This makes it a perfect fit for speed-demons, avid cyclists, and hilly terrain, while its good transmission range also helps master any everyday situation. And particularly those who don’t fold their bikes very often will come to love this time-tested derailleur system.

Metres of development: 1.63–6.24 m

A high-quality option that we’ve been happily installing for many years.

Range without recuperation: 30km.

Only available as a single-speed system.

Power transmission

We recommend chain drives for everyone who doesn’t need to transport their bikes that often (and hence doesn’t need to worry so much about getting things dirty).
And what’s special about a Bernds rear subframe is that it allows you to remove the chain in one piece, simplifying necessary maintenance.

Chain drives require a chain tensioner for all derailleur and hub gear systems.

No greasiness, no squeaking, and up to ten times more durable than a chain. Belt drives are a virtual must on bikes that get carried around a lot. That’s why we’ve been installing them since 1991 – and nowadays, we do so with our own purpose-developed chainrings and sprockets. Belt drives have become one of our specialties – and the Bernds system does without preload, which maximizes smoothness and durability.

Frame finish

The classic in diamond black with our proven three-layer powder coating. Looks elegant and holds up well under intense use, with scratches less easily visible.

Special effect coatings and partial coatings are also available by request.

E-Bernds

Those who frequently ride long distances, transport loads, or have a physical disability should consider an electric motor.

And our 20-inch bikes, with their naturally low centre of gravity, are ideal for such riders – with a safe feel and everything within reach.

Perfect for every need, and combinable with any gear system. Set the Ansmann Type A to your desired speed, and it will assist you as soon as you fall below that speed – even with a load or on an upgrade. And the important 7–20 km/h range is optimally covered, with a gently responsive sensor ensuring a consistently safe ride.

Made in Germany – thanks to which we’ve always enjoyed fast and reliable service.

The Zehus rear-wheel hub motor elegantly conceals its battery within the hub itself. Very purist, very elegant.

Range without recuperation: 30 km.

It’s only available as a single-speed system, so please choose this option as your “basic model and gearing” above.

Mudguards

For a lighter look and everyone, who is not held back by a little moist. We deliver bikes without mudguards more often than you may be thinking.

An all-weather option for everyday riders. Since a folding bike’s rear wheel rests on its mudguard when the bike is folded, we use high-quality stainless steel stays and ultra-flexible rubber mountings to attach the mudguard to the frame.

Saddle

Just right for those who are easy to please.

The deluxe trekking and touring saddle by SQlab.

The SQlab step saddle design’s lower nose means less pressure in those sensitive places. And its firm padding avoids excessive friction by preventing you from sinking in too deep. The SQlab 602 is suitable for medium-to-long distances. And thanks to SQlab’s active saddle technology, the saddle follows your pedalling motion – making for more comfort, less strain on your spinal discs, and less pressure on your sit bones.

SQlab’s top model for an erect riding posture on city bikes.

Firm, high-quality padding combines with the proven SQlab step saddle design for a high level of comfort on long and short trips. Its “active system” with two settings increases comfort and spares your spinal discs in the lumbar region while also reducing pressure on your sit bones.

For those who ride a lot – because the Brooks leather saddle lasts virtually forever and eventually adapts to the shape of your body. By the way: if you put it in the oven or in the sun for a couple minutes prior to riding, it will adapt even faster. But if your bike spends extended periods in the rain, you’ll need to cover your leather saddle in order for it to truly last long.

Available in multiple colours
Women’s and men’s versions

We can, of course, install any saddle you’d like us to if you tell us which it is. There’s just one limitation: it has to be a model without its own shock absorber.

Why this? It’s because the interaction of a saddle’s shock absorption with the bike’s own can produce vibrations that put unpredictable levels of strain on the rider and the materials. And in any case, every Bernds bike already has rear shock absorption. As a standard feature.

Handlebars

Greater comfort thanks to a nearly upright riding position. Moon handlebars make ergonomic sense, above all because they permit a natural hand position while the rider tends to lean forward only a bit.

For that typical roadster feeling. Toulouse handlebars permit an even more upright riding position, with no need to lean forward and hardly any strain at all on your wrists.

For athletic riding. These mountain bike handlebars are nearly straight, putting your body in a more forward and slightly more extended seating position.

This means less air resistance. And since the handlebars are so straight, they lie flat on the bike when it’s folded – making for an even smaller folded form.

You can install any set of handlebars on a Bernds without interfering with foldability. This makes them unique among folding bikes, the fact that we’re admittedly proud of.

Any handlebars can be mounted.
Position memory function and folding procedure remain unaffected.
Prices upon request

Grips

We use various standard grips depending on your shifters. But for a bit more comfort and style, we recommend our Ergon grips. And we can, of course, install any other grips you’d like by special request.

Beyond being stylish, our leather groups are also a good ergonomic fit: their shape provides perfect wrist support. Ideal for all serious riders.

Pedals

Simple, slip-resistant, and quite sufficient if you seldom fold or have no need to minimise your bike’s folded size. These aluminium-body platform pedals do well at covering the basics, but they aren’t removable.

For frequent riders – because there’s no faster way to reduce the width of your folded size. A choice that pays off for everyone who folds often – like those who commute daily by bus or train.

For occasional folders who want a maximally compact folded form. These aluminium quick-release pedals can be removed in a snap thanks to a click on/click off mechanism, but they still use high-quality ball bearings.

Manufactured by MKS, “the Rolls-Royce among pedal producers”, says Thomas.

Two years of developement, every detail from grip to shoe has been overthought. Look simple, but also convince with their inner attributes: high-quality bearings.

A perfect choice, also for frequent riders.

Tyres

Perfect for everyday riding and for all requirements. Big Apple tires by Schwalbe are high-pressure balloon tires that can be used at pressures of between 2.5 and 5 bar. Their good shock-absorption makes for a comfortable ride.

”Only in Berlin, or in the Sahara“, because you will only need them if you have to expect glas shrugs or thorn bushes.

extra-safe 3mm GreenGuard Safetyguard

Optically slightly lighter, offering the great riding attributes of Schwalbe at the same time. Suitable up to 80kg body weight.

Lightweight construction, modern tread design, and enormous traction make for unforgettable riding fun and long tyre life.

ATTENTION: Tire completly black and not as seen on the picture

This tyre’s rubber is made with natural latex from sustainable rubber trees and recycled rubber materials such as rubber gloves and door seals. In addition to conserving natural resources, their production also users less energy. What’s more, Green Compound does without carbon black. So all in all, these tyres represent a considerable step towards sustainability.

Available in black or with a white flank, please specify when ordering.

Light

You don’t need lights as long as you don’t ride on any public roads. But if you do, traffic laws typically require a functioning light set. Our bikes can, of course, be equipped with battery-powered LED lights. But for demanding frequent riders, we recommend a built-in light system.

The Shimano hub dynamo we use is reliable and more convenient than a sidewall dynamo. The coil and axle structure is made of aluminium for greatly reduced weight of approx. 550 g.

We combine every dynamo with the high-quality B&M IQ XS with 70 lux, close-range illumination, and automatic parking light function.

“The best there is,” says Thomas. Schmidt’s Original Hub Dynamo is developed and produced in Germany. What’s special about it is its interior ventilation, which protects the dynamo from moisture and allows the SON to last more or less forever. The best choice for anyone’s needs.

We combine every dynamo with the high-quality B&M IQ XS with 70 lux, close-range illumination, and automatic parking light function.

The lights on an E-Bernds can, of course, be run off of the bike’s rechargeable battery. In this case, we install our usual high-quality cables that keep working even after 100,000 folds.
